18/19/20 Sept 2013 Law Education for Schools TY1&2&3

All students were given a unique insight into law as seen through the eyes of a practising barrister. Law Education for Schools places emphasis on teaching the student the skill of
advocacy.

TY students attended this Open Day. They had the opportunity to attend introductory lectures, visit exhibition stands and tour the campus.

8 - 11 Oct 2013 Horizon AdventureCentre, Kilavalley, Westport, Co. Westport

Students took part in a multi-activity programme including surfing, kayaking,climbing Croagh Patrick, zipwire,Jacobs ladder, high ropes, archery and various team building tasks.

5 Nov 2013 Attending "Observations from a Hedge" in Glór

3 & 4 Dec 2013 Lyric FM "Making Radio"project

Lyric FM Education and Outreach programme involves making classical music based radio programmes. A mobile radio studio is brought to the school and the fundamental aspects of radio programme making are discussed.The programme was facilitated by Lorcan Murray and Eddie Lenihan.

9 Nov 2013 UCD Open Day

TY students attended this Open Day. They had the opportunity to attend introductory lectures, visit exhibition stands and tour the campus.

16 Nov 2013 Pathology Department Open Day - Limerick Regional Hospital

This event took place in conjunction with the "Labs are Vital" initiative organised through the Academy of Medical Laboratory Science in partnership with Abbott Diagnostics, and as part of National Pathology Week, Ireland.

Students were shown around the various Laboratory disciplines, namely Biochemistry, Blood Transfusion, Haematology, Histology and Microbiology, and were given an insight into the function and role of these areas.

Driving Tuition

Students (in groups of three) have started driving lessons with Tim Kelly School of Motoring.

25 - 30 Nov 2013 School Musical

TY students, together with all 4th years took part in our annual musical. This year's show was Cats.

4 Dec 2013 The Physics Show

Hands-on-physics show where students participate in activities and demonstrations. Flight, pressure, light, sound and electricity were among the topics covered in this interactive learning experience. Students launched rockets, made music and learned how to fly helicopters.

7 Dec 2013 TCD Open day

16 - 20 Dec 2013 Community Work

The purpose of this placement is to give students an insight into the service providers in the voluntary and community
sector.

24 January 2014 Prep for Med

Caoimhe McCabe and Grainne Cremin attended UCC's Prep for Med programme this year.They had the opportunity to visit the FLAME Anatomy laboratory.This was followed by attendance at various clinical stations where they learned about Cardiac arrhythmias,taking a blood sample, resuscitation, blood pressure measurement, pulses and rhythms and first aid.
In the afternoon they travelled to Cork University Hospital and attended a presentation on Forensics of a Crime Scene by Assistant State Pathologist, Margot Bolster.
This was followed by observation of live surgery (c section)via video link.

20, 21 & 22 Jan 2014 Cardiac First Responders Course

The purpose of this course is to enable students to assess a collapsed casualty, perform CPR on an adult, child and infant, how to recognise the signs of choking and how to recognise the signs of a heart attack and stroke and to be able to provide treatment.

1 March 2014 TY Drama Festival

Our TY 1 class performed Alan Ayckbourn's "Ernie's Incredible Illucinations" in the Briery Gap Macroom on 3 February. This is a comedy about Ernie Frasier, a dreamer with a difference. Ernie has a vivid imagination and his thoughts have the disconcerting habit of turning into reality..They qualified for the final on 1 March where they were placed second.Molly Cantwell also received a Special Adjudicators award for her performance.

5 February 2014 Big and Bold,Hot and Cold Magic Show

The purpose of this demonstration was to engage students in Chemistry and the possibilities available from studying this subject.

12 February 2014 Visit to Vistakon

As part of Engineers Week TY students visited Vistakon (part of the Medical Device & Diagnostics Division of Johnson & Johnson). Vistakon is the largest manufacturer of Disposable Contact Lenses in the world. The visit gave students a real insight into what engineers actually do. They learnt about the hugh range of specialist disciplines and how engineers work together to design solutions, troubleshoot problems and make processes run more efficiently.

6 March 2014 Student Enterprise Awards 2014

Our TY2 class exhibited their mini company projects in the West County Hotel Ennis as part of the Clare County Enterprise Board's Student Enterprise Awards 2014.
The four mini comnpanies are
Shove (fluffy insole), Scenties (small bags of pot pourri), Picafew (personalised posters) and Getta Grip (sock grips). Well done to Shove on being awarded "Best Business Plan".

6/13/20 March On being an Archaeologist for a day

Clare Museum offer this Geography programme to secondary schools. Students will get a chance to examine artefacts up close and learn the scientific techniques used by Archaeologists for dating finds, testing soil and extracting artefacts from the ground through fun hands on experiments.

13 March YSI Speakout

TY1 (Beware of IT) and TY2 (Human Price Tag)presented their projects in the Lime Tree theatre, Mary Immaculate College Limerick.

"Beware of IT" is looking at internet safety and is targeting teenagers in particular. They are raising awareness of the risks of friending random people on Facebook and the consequences of making pesonal details available to all.

"Human Price Tag" investigates human trafficking and sexual exploitation. To celebrate International Women's Day TY3 showcased a presentation they have developed about prostitution in Ireland, which examines the experiences of women and girls and also looks at the legislation in place.

This workshop offers students a first hand insight into life as a professional songwriter / musician and an overview of song writing and the music business. Students write, perform and record their own songs during a two day workshop. Students will receive a CD with their song(s), along with a“Songschool Certificate of Participation".

21 March 2014 Young St. Vincent de Paul (TY1,2 &3)

Our young St. Vincent de Paul society was set up in January by our TY2 class through their participation in the John Paul 2 awards. As part of a fundraising initiative our TY2 class held a sleepover in school for all TY students on 21 March.

TY SpikeBall Leaders Programme 2013/14

Coláiste Muire has been selected again to participate in this programme. VAI (Volleyball Association of Ireland) delivered a 6 hour TY Leadership course to TY students in January on
how to introduce SpikeBall to primary schools in the local community. TY students in Coláiste Muire are linking up with a number of Primary schools locally(Quin, Ballyea and Cloughleigh) to organise and coach a class for 6 weeks. TY students receive instruction on coaching, refereeing and the administration of the programme by the VAI.They are to be certified as VIA/ISC SpikeBall leaders on completion of the course.TY students will hold a SpikeBall Blitz to mark the completion of the training sessions.

As part of Geography, students will undertake a study of Coastal Erosion. The emphasis is on students doing practical work themselves, using equipment and collecting
data. The data collected is analysed to ensure fullunderstanding under the guidance of Colin Bunce from the Burren

29 April 2014 Visit to Criminal Courts of Justice, Kilmnainham Gaol and The Irish Aid Centre

TY 1 classes will visit the Criminal Courts of Justice.This visit is organised by the Courts Service. A Barrister will stage a Mock Trial for the class. Students will have the opportunity to attend various court cases in the complex.
In the afternoon TY 3 students will have a guided tour of Kilmainham Gaol and spend some time in the museum. The tour of Kilmainham is facilitated by Heritage Ireland.Meanwhile TY 2 will visit the Irish Aid Centre.


7 May 2014 YSI Showcase


12 May 2014 Mock Trial Competition 2014

Two teams of TY students will participate in this competition on Monday 12 May.Law Education for School's Mock Trial Competition will take place in Loughrea Court House throughout the week of 12-16 May.This year's sponsor is Pat McDonagh of Supermacs with a first prize of €1000.

The purpose of this night is to celebrate students' efforts and achievements.There is a display of students work completed throughout the year. A number of students speak on their experience of TY.This is followed by a presentation of various certificates of
participation and achievement.
