YUMMIE SKOOL DINNERS

YUM were awarded a 5 year contract in September 2008 to provide healthy school meals to over 600 students and staff. The project involved the re-fit of the school canteen and a new healthy options menu and healthy vending solution. Commenting on the new project, Eoin Fanning of YUM said "whilst it's a challenge to change unhealthy eating habits of Irish teenagers, we have a golden opportunity to make a difference"

The menu on offer is based on the food pyramid and consists mainly of fresh vegetables and low fat, non-processed foods. Unhealthy snacks such as chocolate, fizzy drinks and crisps are not allowed but fresh fruit, waters, juices and fairtrade tea and coffee are available to all.

Over the coming school year,YUM will be rolling out initiatives which allow students connect with the food they eat by visiting YUM's producers, suppliers and their own kitchens where they can see how food is grown and prepared.

To minimise the environmental impact and as part of the Green Schools Initiative, the school has installed "pig" composters which turn food waste into compost. YUM have removed all unnecessary packaging which in turn reduces the amount of paper and packaging going to recycling.
