Green Schools

Green Schools is a programme run by An Taisce and the local County Council to promote environmental awareness in schools. It aims to include students, teaching and ancillary staff and parents.

A Green Flag is awarded to schools who attain certain criteria. The main areas of focus are rubbish and recycling, energy awareness and transport.

A Green School committee has been set up consisting of Environmental Prefects from each class together with teachers, the school caretaker and some parents. The committee met once a month.

Currently we are working on
  • Increasing our recycling.

  • Reducing the amount of waste we produce.

  • Setting up a composting system.

The Green Schools Programme aims to include all members of the School Community. Parent participation is most welcome. We are open to new ideas and suggestions.

On May 8th 2009, Coláiste Muire was awarded a Green Flag at an official ceremony held in the school. Minister for the Environment, John Gormley T.D. was in attendance. Our school is the first post-primary school in Ennis to achieve green school status.
