School Choir

Membership of Coláiste Muire school choir is by audition and is open to students from second year to leaving cert. At present there are 92 students in the choir.

The choir sings in three or four parts and has a varied repertoire of pieces from classical to popular music. Much of the choir's recent work has been a capella repertoire.

The choir participates in a variety of performances during the year including liturgical celebrations, concerts, festivals, competitions and tours. The aim of the choir is to give every student the opportunity to reach a high individual and group skill level in vocal music. This is done through performance and rehearsal settings that maintain high standards and purposeful participation.

The school choir has travelled abroad to Finland, England and the Czech Republic and performed in joint concerts with the National Chamber Choir, The Cork County Youth Orchestra, Regina Nathan ( Soprano) and Paul Byrom ( Tenor) and the Harlem Gospel Choir. Members of the choir have successfully auditioned for the Irish Youth Choir.

The choir's recent achievements are:

  • First place and a certificate of distinction at the 2004 Chester Competitive Festival of Performing Arts, in England.


  • Fourth place in the Lyric FM Carols for Christmas Extravaganza, 2005 which was broadcast from University of Limerick Concert Hall.


  • Certificates of distinction at the Cork Choral Festival 2005, 2006 and 2007.


  • First place, Gold Level and an award for the best performance of the compulsory piece by Bohuslav Martinu at the Young Prague Festival 2006, in the Czech Republic.


On the choir's return visit to the Young Prague Festival in March of 2008 they were awarded the Silver medal.

  • Cork Choral Festival

  • Our School Choir were awarded 3rd prize in the Cork Choral Festival on Friday 1st May 2009.
    The Choir also received a special award for Best Performance of a piece through Irish.The piece was called Geibheann.

    The School Choir also came 2nd in the National School Choir exams for 2009.
