Peer Helpers

Coming to Secondary school can be a significant transition for many students , many of whom are coming from the support and security of small rural Primary schools.

For many years Coláiste Muire has run a Peer Mentoring scheme.  Leaving Cert students who have volunteered to participate in the programme meet with first year students on their first day in secondary school, Induction Day. We have 60 Peer Helpers for 2016/17. They also meet with first years in small groups every second week during the first term .These Senior students give their time, encouragement and support to  First Years, and provide positive role models for the younger students. They  are available throughout the year to support , listen and direct for appropriate help if required.

Peer Helpers, work under the Guidance of Ms. O’Regan and Sr. Teresa. They take on extra responsibility in all events associated with First Years, and give generously of their time, wisdom and good humour. All Peer Helpers receive a certificate at Graduation from the school to acknowledge the importance of their befriending role to the young students.
