Spike Island visit

Monastery, Fortress, Prison , Home

From a 6th century monastery to a British army fortress, from the largest ever prison in Britain or Ireland to its island homes, the story of Spike Island is the story of Ireland.

Over 2,300 prisoners once crammed the Victorian prison cells, and thousands were transported from Spike to Australia and the Americas.

Today visitors can explore deep tunnels, scale high walls and walk abandoned prisons as you join Ireland’s best storytellers for an unrivalled 1300 year journey through Ireland’s religious, social and penal history.

We have visited Spike Island on a number of occasions and are due to visit with TY 2022/23 on Monday 8 May 2023.
